Connie Stagnaro

Mrs. Sparago remained quite imperious throughout her time at St. John Villa (SJU). I was in the chorus, The Chanters, through my Junior and Senior year of HS. I graduated in 1982, and to this day remember keenly the knocked knees I felt in standing before such a grande dame with those perfectly arched eyebrows. During my time Mrs. Sparago had the habit of placing her ear a few inches from your mouth to make sure you were singing! You never dreamed of just mouthing the words to slide by. I believe Mrs. S retired a few years after I left, but I'm sure the Roger's and Hammerstein musicals she staged have lived on in the memories of students who attended St. John Villa.

HH replies: Connie, thank you so much for your wonderful comment. I can count on one hand those teachers who made an impact, and the grande dame Sparago is close to the top of that list. Brava.
